Is a car detailer worth the money compared with a £10 car wash?

6 October 2026 · 6 min read · Joshua

Yes, a detailer costs more up front than a typical £10 car wash, but for most cars it is worth it. I'm Joshua, and I run Washy Luxe Limited in Glapwell, Chesterfield S44 5NS. The extra buys hours of careful work with clean kit and suitable products, not a rushed wash that can strip protection and scratch paint.

Yes, a detailer costs more

I'm not going to pretend otherwise. My Exterior Safe Wash & Protect starts from £72, and a Full Valet from £154. A typical £10 car wash is a fraction of that, and I understand the appeal.

But the price on the board is not the whole cost. What matters is what happens to your paint, trim and protection over months of washes, and what it costs to put right afterwards.

What you get for £10 and 10 minutes

A typical £10 wash is often done in under 10 minutes. To make that work, the process has to be fast. Strong chemicals do a lot of the loosening, and brushes, mitts or towels do the rest, often on car after car through the day.

That is not a dig at the people doing the work. Ten minutes simply doesn't leave time to rinse grit off properly, let products work gently, or swap to a clean mitt when one picks up dirt.

When I wash a car, the time goes on the unglamorous bits that protect the paint:

  • A thorough rinse and pre-wash to lift loose grit before anything touches the paint.
  • Clean wash mitts and microfibre towels for every car, so I'm not dragging someone else's dirt across yours.
  • Quality, pH-appropriate products chosen for the paint, trim and wheels, rather than the strongest thing available.
  • Careful drying, then a protective layer so dirt has less to cling to next time.

A full valet takes hours, not minutes. That time, plus the kit and products, is most of what you are paying for.

How a quick wash damages paint: chemical

When there is no time for gentle hand washing, many quick washes lean on strong pre-wash chemicals and traffic film removers to shift the dirt. Used heavily, often, and left to sit, they can cause problems:

  • Stripped protection. Wax and sealant break down faster, so the paint is left bare and gets dirty more quickly.
  • Dull or faded trim. Unpainted black plastics can turn grey or patchy.
  • Staining. Chemicals left to dry on paint, glass or wheels, especially in sun or wind, can leave marks that a normal wash won't shift.

None of this tends to happen in one visit. It is the build-up over months of quick washes that shows.

...and mechanical

This is the damage people notice. Grit is abrasive. If a brush, mitt or towel has been used on the cars before yours, it can carry that grit across your paint, and each pass leaves fine scratches in the clear coat.

Over time those scratches add up to swirls, the spider-web pattern you see around a street light or in low sun, plus deeper random scratches. Where a quick machine buff is offered on top, rushed polishing can leave holograms too. Darker colours show it first.

I've written separately about jet bays and hard-water marks in hard-water spots and jet-wash swirls, so I won't repeat that here.

What the real cost looks like

This is where the cheap wash stops looking cheap. Swirls and scratches don't wash out. Once they are in the clear coat, the fix is machine polishing, which I only do at the Glapwell unit:

  • Paint Enhancement, from £352: a machine polish to brighten the paint, plus a 1-year ceramic. It improves the finish but is not full swirl removal.
  • Paint correction, quoted from £350 after inspection: for deeper swirls and scratches. The price depends on the paint and how much work it needs.

As a simple example using my guide prices only: £350 is more than four Exterior Safe Wash & Protect visits at £72 each (4 × £72 = £288). The cost of correcting wash damage could have paid for a lot of careful washes.

To be fair, not every quick wash leaves you needing correction, and plenty of cars never get there. But if you care how the car looks, or you're handing back a lease, it is worth weighing up. The options are compared in valet vs polish vs correction.

If you still use a car wash: how to reduce the damage

I would rather you used a car wash carefully than not at all. A few habits make a real difference:

  • Rinse first. Get as much loose grit off with water as you can before anything touches the paint.
  • Avoid the brushes. Shared brushes are a common cause of swirls, especially on dark cars.
  • Skip dirty shared towels and chamois. Bring your own clean microfibre towel to dry the car.
  • Don't let chemicals dry on the paint. Rinse them off in time, especially on warm or windy days.
  • Go easy on wheels and trim. Rinse wheel cleaner off well and keep strong chemicals off bare plastics where you can.
  • Rinse off winter salt regularly. My winter car care guide has more.

If you can, mix it up: book a careful wash or valet every so often to reset the car and top up its protection.

Frequently asked questions

Is a £10 car wash bad for my car?

Not always, and not every one. But many quick washes rely on strong chemicals and shared brushes, mitts or towels. Done often, that can strip protection and leave swirls and fine scratches, especially on dark paint.

Why does a detailer cost more than a car wash?

You are paying for time and care. A valet takes hours rather than minutes, with clean wash media for each car and products suited to the paint, trim and wheels. Guide prices start from £72 for an Exterior Safe Wash & Protect.

Can a detailer fix swirls caused by car washes?

Often, yes, at the Glapwell unit. Paint Enhancement, from £352, brightens the paint with a machine polish plus a 1-year ceramic. Deeper swirls need paint correction, quoted from £350 after inspection. Neither is done on a driveway.
