Valet vs hand polish vs machine polish vs multi-stage correction

5 October 2026 · 5 min read · Joshua

I am Joshua. People often ask for a “polish” when they mean a valet, or for ceramic when the paint still needs correction. This post compares a valet, a hand polish, a machine polish / Paint Enhancement, and multi-stage correction — with real guide prices and when I recommend a respray instead.

Quick comparison

  • Valet (mobile or unit): Exterior Safe Wash & Protect from £65; Interior Deep Clean from £120; Full Valet from £140. Cleans dirt. Does not remove swirls.
  • Hand polish: Soft finishing by hand can add short-lived gloss on a clean panel. It does not replace machine work on swirled paint, and I do not sell it as correction.
  • Machine polish / Paint Enhancement, from £320 (unit only): Machine polish to brighten the paint, plus a 1-year ceramic. Not full swirl-deletion.
  • Multi-stage paint correction, quoted from £350 (unit only): After inspection at Glapwell. Hours depend on the paint; badly swirled finishes cost more.
  • Winter Protection, from £380 (unit only): Decontamination, enhancement and a 2-year Labocosmetica ceramic. See ceramic coating at the unit.

Valet first, polish second

If the car is dirty, start with a wash or valet. Polishing over grit makes more swirls. Once the paint is clean, we can judge whether enhancement or correction is worth it. For the unit side of the work, read why paint correction stays at Glapwell.

Hand polish vs machine polish

A hand polish is limited: light finishing oils, short-lived shine, little cut on real wash swirls. A machine polish uses measured pads and compounds under controlled light. That is what Paint Enhancement and correction use — and why they stay indoors at 8 Blacksmiths Close, Glapwell, S44 5NS.

When a respray is the honest answer

  • Clear coat worn through to colour or primer.
  • Deep scratches or key marks that polishing would only widen.
  • Badly mismatched panels after previous bodywork.
  • Oxidised paint that has little clear coat left to work with.

In those cases I will tell you a body shop is the better spend. Selling correction hours that cannot rebuild missing clear coat helps nobody.

Mobile vs unit

On your driveway: washes, interiors and full valets within about 35 miles of Glapwell. At the unit only: machine polishing, paint correction, ceramic coating and Winter Protection.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a valet and a polish?

A valet cleans the car — exterior wash, interior, or both. A polish uses a machine to cut and refine the clear coat so swirls and haze reduce. Polishing is not part of a standard valet.

Is Paint Enhancement the same as multi-stage correction?

No. Paint Enhancement (from £320) is a machine polish plus a 1-year ceramic to brighten the finish. Multi-stage correction is longer work, quoted from £350 after inspection, aimed at deeper swirl reduction.

Can you polish on my driveway?

No. Machine polishing, paint correction, ceramic coating and Winter Protection stay at the Glapwell unit only. Valets still come to you.

When is a respray the honest answer?

When clear coat is worn through, panels are mismatched, or deep scratches go to primer or metal. Polishing cannot rebuild missing clear coat. I will say so rather than sell hours of correction that will not look right.

How much do the options cost?

Exterior Safe Wash from £65, Interior Deep Clean from £120, Full Valet from £140 (mobile or unit). Paint Enhancement from £320, paint correction quoted from £350, Winter Protection from £380 — Glapwell unit only.
