Winter car care: salt, grit and what actually helps

5 October 2026 · 4 min read · Joshua

I run Washy Luxe from Glapwell, and winter is when most cars around Chesterfield and Sheffield look tired fastest. This is practical winter care, not a sales page for one package. For the unit package itself, see Winter Protection in Chesterfield and ceramic coating at the unit.

What winter does to a car

Gritted roads put salt and grit onto paint, wheels and the underside. Salt holds moisture against metal. Grit scratches if you wipe it dry. A greasy film of road dirt builds up in wet weather and bonds more readily to unprotected paint. Short days do not stop UV, and the car is rarely fully dry.

What I recommend between visits

  • Rinse the lower panels, arches and wheels when you can, rather than leaving salt to dry for weeks.
  • Do not dry-wipe a dirty car. That is how wash swirls start.
  • Keep the cabin clear of wet mats and school-run crumbs if you can, so mould and damp do not sit.
  • Book a proper wash or valet when a rinse is no longer enough.

Mobile valets vs unit work in winter

On your driveway: exterior washes, interior deep cleans and full valets. I bring my own water and kit. See what happens on a mobile valet visit for the step-by-step.

At the Glapwell unit only: paint correction, machine polishing, ceramic coating and Winter Protection. Those need still air and controlled light. They are never done at your address.

Winter Protection, explained briefly

Winter Protection is from £380 at the unit: decontamination, enhancement and a 2-year Labocosmetica ceramic. It does not replace washing through the season. It makes dirt release more easily. Guide price; booking or an email gets you a firm figure.

Frequently asked questions

Should I wash more often in winter?

Yes, when you can. Salt and grit sit on paint and in arches. A gentle wash is better than leaving it for weeks, because dry wiping a gritty car scratches paint.

Is Winter Protection the same as a winter wash?

No. Winter washes and valets can come to your driveway. Winter Protection is a Glapwell unit package from £380: decontamination, enhancement and a 2-year Labocosmetica ceramic.

Can you do ceramic coating on my driveway in winter?

No. Ceramic coating, polishing, paint correction and Winter Protection stay at the Glapwell unit only.

What should I do between valets?

Rinse the arches and lower panels when you can, avoid dry wiping grit, and book a valet when the cabin or paint looks past a quick rinse.

How do I book?
